Bobst strengthens its position in the global gravure printing market

Cerutti mainly produces rotogravure printing presses for packaging and publishing, as well as specialty printing, including flexographic printing presses for newspapers and telephone directories, and conversion equipment for coating, laminating and cutting. Products include the redesigned R98X Evo, which is a 1.3m wide rotogravure press that can run at 450 mpm, with options for digital printing and online lamination, cold sealing, heat sealing and hot melt coating.

Cerutti was founded by Giovanni Cerutti in 1920 and is headquartered in Casale Monferrato, not far from the new headquarters of Bobst Italia. Initially, he made any mechanical machines ordered by customers, including hay balers. In 1949, he built a rotogravure printing machine for PVC tablecloths for a Polish company, and then a magazine printing machine for a publisher in Milan in 1950. In 1951, Giovanni, now working with his sons Luigi and Carlo, decided to focus on flexible packaging and produced a rotogravure printing machine for cellophane printing. Since then, the company has continued to expand, entering the US market in 1981 and building a flexographic printing press for newspaper printing in 1985. Since 1999, Cerutti gravure printing presses have been used to print polymer banknotes, including the £5 and £10 banknotes printed for the Bank of the Bank. U.K.

However, the company went into bankruptcy in October 2020 due to an asset auction. Both Bobst and Seconda Rinascita showed interest in Bobst's eventual victory, and some magazines reported that Bobst paid 7 million euros.

The acquisition includes all assets related to Officine Meccaniche Giovanni Cerutti SpA, Cerutti Packaging Equipment SpA, service company 24/7 Cerutti Service Srl, and the Cerutti brand and intellectual property portfolio. Bobst will also hire 30 former Cerutti employees out of the 134 employees Cerutti hired last year.

Davide Garavaglia, general manager of Bobst Italia and head of the gravure, vacuum, coating and composite product lines, commented: “As a company, Bobst Italia is characterized by financial and social sustainability, so it can create value in the long term. Semester. Upon completion, we will be able to integrate Cerutti technology and its technical experts into our organization to increase our existing expertise and capabilities. This also means that we can now provide BOBST high-end equipment for Cerutti machines installed worldwide. Level of service and support."
